Tools for keeping our mental well-being during isolation

Part Four: Re-build - coming out of the cave ~ Mental Wellbeing in Times of CrisisThere are three aspects to maintaining mental wellbeing at this time. These are not distinctive phases, but some previous behaviours need to achieved before we can build on the next and other suggestions are useful in all three stages.

1. Stop the fear mentality

2. Re-set - going into the cave

3. Re-build - coming out of the cave

Re-build - coming out of the cave

This is when we are feeling nourished and feeling more energised and whole again. This is metaphorically coming out of the cave. Now that I have spent time looking after me, and filling my cup, I can now give to others from a full cup.

The trick is learning how to give without emptying your cup. Otherwise, like before, you will reach burnout without knowing it and it just becomes your normal again. Ensure the previous suggestions are embedded in this phase as well.

Keep social connections going. We are social beings and need our pack/herd around us. During the re-set stage, the connections might be more simple, or complex. We might need more support from our networks or might feel the relief of not having to be there for others. In the re-build stage, it is deepening connections and starting to focus on others a bit more – have virtual coffee dates or lunch.

We are fun loving creatures. Allow yourself to play – whatever play looks like for you. It can be dancing in the lounge, listening to music or playing board games. Again, the ‘what’ is less important than how it makes you feel. Allow some fun into your day. This will help lighten your heart and gives us a sense of connection.

Get busy with a difference. What can you do at home that you have been putting off for so long? This is about learning how to be busy and still take care of yourself. So in the busyness, still have breaks for lunch, to just sit and relax while having a cuppa or just stop and enjoy the sun. This is about learning how to look after you for when isolation ends.

Exercise. Our bodies need to move. Find ways of exercising that are fun and enjoyable for you. This is good for both the mind and the body as exercise releases endorphins which makes us feel good.

Finding your joy. What makes your heart sing? When are you most at peace? This is about finding your joys – not getting joy from things or people, but what you can do to bring joy into your heart. The lightening journal might provide clues as to what really makes you happy. Find, then animate and grow your joy. Joy is a mindset you can cultivate and grow so you can have joy on demand.
